Smart Connections for a Healthy Future:
Building a New Model for Community Care and Talent Development through Collaboration
Purpose of the Activity
This activity involved faculty and students from the University of Guam and West Virginia University visiting a local community in Beitou to observe and learn about practical approaches to promoting the physical and mental health of older adults.
The community leader introduced the community’s demographic structure, needs, and development initiatives through a presentation. Local senior participants also gave a performance to showcase the outcomes of their regular participation in physical and mental health promotion activities, highlighting their learning achievements and group collaboration.
The visit concluded with a panel discussion, during which faculty and students from the University of Guam shared their experiences from the activity, discussed daily health maintenance practices, and reflected on the role of community support networks.
This visit focused on the themes of “understanding the local context, respecting community dynamics, and strengthening connections.” Through on-site observation and interactive dialogue, participants gained a deeper understanding of how NTUNHS implements its USR initiatives within the local community.
